[Kerwin at Passrider.com] Have You Flown avelo? | PHL Travel Tips

In this week's newsletter, I recount my low-cost carrier journey so far this week. Plus a non-rev travel tip for PHL airport and briefly talk about my avelo travels.

Hi Fellow Traveler,

If you’re new to the newsletter, welcome. If you’re a regular reader, thank you so much for reading my words each week :-).

Check out this post for existing Cyber Week Deals that are still hanging around; these brands won’t stop yet :-).

I’m writing this from the Philadelphia Airport (PHL) and the Plattsburgh International Airport (PBG) where I’m in the middle of my three-day odyssey to fly four new low-cost carriers to me.

Yesterday, I flew from Ft. Lauderdale, FL (FLL) to Wilmington, DE (ILG) on avelo. This is a pretty basic airline; they got me to Wilmington safe and ontime. I have to check, but I think this flight may complete my 50 states by air; i.e. flying to all 50 states. I’ve already visited all 50 states, but all were not by plane. I did check and I’m missing Connecticut, no it means I have to fly avelo again to New Haven at some point.

The Wilmington Airport is really tiny; too tiny I think for almost 200 passengers on a 737-800. I’d love to go back and watch how they deal with all that. I mean, it’s super tiny.

And today, I flew Contour Airlines from PHL to PBG.

Here are some tips for the Philly Airport (PHL).

If you’re near Terminal A-West, check out the windows by the gates—they offer some of the best views of international departures, especially wide-body aircraft. I once saw a Virgin 747-400 there back in the day…

And if you're feeling adventurous, take a stroll to Terminal F to see the smaller regional jets up close; the walkways connecting the terminals often provide some great photo ops. Let. me know how your visit was when you passed through.

As a result of my travel shenanigans, this week’s newsletter will be short and sweet.

This week I’ve got the following:

  • I wanted to re-iterate this video as you must be prepared if you’re heading to the UK after January 8, 2025

  • Two new aviation-related news headlines just for you

  • And I have a simple Passrider Tip for you about PHL area since I’m here now.

Passrider Travel Tip of the Week

Tip for PHL: Explore Nearby Alternate Airports

If flights out of Philadelphia International (PHL) are looking full, consider nearby alternate airports like Atlantic City International (ACY) or Lehigh Valley International (ABE) or Wilmington, DE (ILG) which is a 30 minute drive and accessible by Amtrak and SEPTA.

ACY and ABE are both within about 90 minutes of PHL and often have lighter passenger loads. For even more options, check Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) or Newark Liberty International (EWR)—larger hubs that might have better availability and more flexibility.

Bonus: If you’re flexible, Amtrak from Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station can connect you to these cities quickly, making alternate airports easily accessible for non-revving!
