[Kerwin at Passrider.com] What Is A Buddy Pass? | What Is Non-Rev Travel?

This week, I address three popular question in the pass travel world. Open, to learn more.

Hi Fellow Traveler,

I hope you’re having a great week.

If you’re new to the newsletter, welcome. If you’re a regular reader, thank you so much for reading my words each week :-).

Hope you’re non-revving been good this pass week. Did you go anywhere fun?

Easter/Passover starts next week, so the flight loads may be heavy. Remember to do your research and look for diamonds in the rough.

REAL-ID

Real ID will be here on May 7, 2025. This means that your government-issued ID must have certain traits in order for you to travel (fly) domestically in the U.S. You can see the new rules at https://www.dhs.gov/real-id. If you do not have a REAL ID then you can use your passport to travel. There are also other select documents you can use as well.

BUDDY PASS TRAVEL

Let’s I was looking over what content to provide and realized that there are always questions about using buddy pass, so I wrote an article on it.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I’ll address it in the article. Click here or on the photo below to read the story. Please share with others you think will benefit.

WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A NON-REV?

Passrider Travel Tip of the Week

Be Ready for Irregular Operations (IROP) Opportunities

As we get deeper into the spring travel season—with unpredictable weather and busy schedules—irregular operations (IROP) like delays, cancellations, or aircraft swaps can actually work in your favor as a non-rev traveler. Of course the reverse can happen too.

Here’s how to take advantage:

  • Stay close to the gate and monitor multiple departure boards.

  • Politely check in with gate agents if you notice a delay or cancellation—sometimes a swapped aircraft or last-minute rebooking frees up seats on another flight.

  • Be ready to go immediately—non-revs who are packed light and flexible are more likely to get offered that surprise seat if they are next on the list.

  • Don’t leave the gate until the aircraft pushes and even then linger a bit if you have the time.

Bonus: Use this time to brush up on your backup routings and alternate airports—those quick pivots can really pay off when the schedule goes sideways.

Here’s a new video for you too; it’s this week’s Travel Talk:
