Leverage Miles + Cash Options for Flexible Award Bookings
If you're a little short on miles—or if you prefer to conserve your points for future trips—consider the Miles + Cash option offered by many airlines. This redemption method lets you pay for part of your award ticket with cash while using your miles for the remainder, offering a flexible way to book flights without having to wait until you’ve accumulated a full award balance.
How to Make It Work:
Check Your Airline’s Redemption Options:
Not all programs offer Miles + Cash, so verify that your preferred airline provides this option on its award booking portal.
Review the Cost Breakdown:
Compare the combined cost (miles plus cash) with the full cash price to ensure you’re still getting a good value.
Some airlines offer a fixed conversion rate or set fee for the cash portion, so know the numbers before booking.
Plan Strategically:
Use this option when a flight’s cash fare is moderately low and your miles balance is just shy of what’s needed for a full award.
It’s a great way to secure travel now and avoid letting your miles lose value or expire while you wait to accumulate more.
Stack with Credit Card Rewards:
If you pay the cash portion with a travel rewards credit card, you might also earn points or miles on that expense, further boosting your rewards portfolio.
Pro Tip:
Evaluate your travel plans at the start of the year to see where you might benefit from a Miles + Cash booking—especially if your desired travel dates are filling up quickly or if a fare sale coincides with your travel plans.
