MILES/POINTS TIP OF THE WEEK

Leverage Open-Jaw and Multi-City Bookings for More Value

Did you know that many airlines allow you to book award itineraries with an “open-jaw” (flying into one city and departing from another) or add a stopover—often without significantly increasing the miles cost? This can help you visit multiple destinations on a single trip while getting more out of your hard-earned miles.

How It Works:

  1. Open-Jaw Booking

    • Example: Fly from Houston to London, then return from Paris back to Houston.

    • You only need separate transportation (train, bus, drive or a flight) between London and Paris, allowing you to visit more places without booking another full award ticket.

  2. Multi-City or Stopover Booking

    • If your airline’s award chart or dynamic pricing allows, you can often add a stopover for a few days (or even weeks) in a connecting city, turning it into a mini vacation en route.

  3. Check Airline Policies

    • Each airline has its own rules about how many stopovers or open-jaws are permitted on an award ticket. Familiarize yourself with these guidelines to maximize your itinerary.

  4. Pricing Your Itinerary

    • Compare the award price of a simple round-trip ticket versus adding a stopover or open-jaw. Sometimes, the mileage difference is minimal or even the same, giving you more travel for your miles.

Pro Tip: When planning a big trip, experiment with your airline’s booking engine by selecting “multi-city” or “advanced search” options. You may uncover creative route combinations that deliver better value than a standard round-trip!
