MILES/POINTS TIP OF THE WEEK

Don’t Sit on Your Miles/Points—Redeem Strategically and Frequently

Frequent flyer programs are constantly evolving. Whether it’s sudden devaluations, changes to award charts, or shifting redemption rates, the miles you earned last year may not hold the same value today. To get the most out of your hard-earned rewards, it’s often better to use them sooner rather than later.

How to Stay Ahead of Devaluations:

  1. Redeem Regularly:
Instead of stockpiling miles, use them for flights or upgrades when it suits your travel plans. This helps you avoid waking up to a surprise devaluation.

  2. Monitor Program Announcements:
Keep an eye on loyalty program emails, newsletters, and official forums. Knowing about upcoming changes gives you the chance to burn your miles before their value drops.

  3. Diversify Your Loyalty Portfolios:
Don’t rely solely on one airline or hotel program. Spread your earnings across multiple programs or use flexible points (like those earned from certain credit cards) that can transfer to various partners. This way, a single program’s devaluation doesn’t cut deeply into all your rewards.

  4. Book Speculatively:
If your future travel dates are somewhat flexible, consider making award reservations while good rates are available. If cancellation policies are reasonable, you can lock in value now and adjust your plans later.

Pro Tip: Remember, miles and points are like a currency that can be “inflated” over time. If you spot a good award redemption that matches your travel goals, grab it. Holding onto rewards in hopes of a better future deal can sometimes backfire when programs update their pricing, and that’s very common these days.
