Hi {{Name|Fellow Traveler}},
As you may know, Spirit Airlines ceased all operations at 3:00 a.m. ET this morning (Saturday) after a last-minute bailout collapsed. No more flights. No transfers. A lot of people are sadly out of work. If you're holding a Spirit ticket, you have to buy a new one on a different carrier.
Some carriers like American, Delta, jetBlue, Southwest and United are offering special fares for a limited time to help fliers get home and/or salvage their plans.
The hard part about airlines folding is the toll on the employees. If you’re one of those employees, I wish you all the best.
The post I have at https://www.passrider.com/spirit-airlines-faces-imminent-shutdown-as-bailout-collapses/ provides airline history, Spirit routes, plus all the information in this newsletter. And an application that shows you Spirit routes and the airlines that serve them. This will help you plan accordingly, as flight loads will change due to the Spirit shutdown.
The airline family is stepping up to support stranded customers and employees. If I missed something, hit reply and let me know.
American has set up a special page at https://www.aa.com/en-us/here-to-help-fares to help ticket holders book fares on the affected routes. And will help to get working crew members home. In addition, they also have a special recruitment page for you at https://jobs.aa.com/go/supportingspirit/9903300/. They’ve also noted that they will be holding future job fairs, so keep an eye out.
Delta Air Lines will still honor the existing interline agreement for standby travel for Spirit’s pilots and flight attendants for the next 10 days. They’ve also set up a special website for displaced employees at https://delta.avature.net/en_US/careers?tags=SpiritEmployees#/.
jetBlue is assisting Spirit customers with special fares for a limited time, details at https://www.jetblue.com/travel-alerts. Displaced pilots and flight attendants can fly jumpseat for the next two weeks.
Southwest will take care of the revenue customers at the airport and rebook as appropriate at special fares. They are also offering a status match to their frequent flyer program levels based on your Spirit program level. For employment, head to their regular Careers page at https://careers.southwestair.com/us/en/ and apply.
United Airlines has also set up job information and will be tagging the Spirit employees at https://united.com/SpiritEmployees. Plus, they are offering pass travel on United for the next two weeks. Book tickets on ID90. And they have special fares for the next two weeks at https://www.united.com/specialfares for those with existing Spirit tickets.
I updated the full breakdown on Passrider.com — every route that went dark, every hub, the IAH impact, and exactly what to do if you're stranded and how it will affect your non-rev journey. Please share with anyone you think can use this information:
What this means for nonrev travelers
Spirit was the price floor on select Caribbean routes out of FLL, MCO, and half the Northeast. I' have friends who used them as their backup plans when they wouldn’t make their own flights.
When a ULCC disappears, legacy carriers typically raise fares fast — and those cheaper seats fill with leisure travelers who just lost their budget option. That means more competition on exactly the routes you want to non-rev: San Juan, St. Thomas, Punta Cana, Sint Maarten, Jamaica.
If you're planning a Caribbean trip this summer, the window to get ahead of the load shift is now — not in two weeks. You have to understand how the Caribbean works.
The Caribbean Non-Rev Planning Playbook was built for exactly this.
Island-by-island routing strategies, load intel, alternate gateway airports, and how to work the Caribbean corridor when the cheap seats disappear.
